Manchester Box Cup win for Superbox's Isabella Dempsey

TEEN boxer Bella Dempsey secured an impressive win at the Manchester Box Cup.

The Superbox Northwich competitor, a student at County High School, stopped a multi title-winning Irish opponent in the final of their category at Leigh Leisure Centre.

Dempsey, 15, proved to be too strong on the day for Armagh Down Development Squad fighter Sionnain McCoy.

She achieved a first-round stoppage against the St John Bosco Boxing Club Newry member, who has been crowned Mid Ulster, Belfast Box Cup, Ulster Nine Counties, Louth, and Ulster Championship winner.

Steve Bunby, who leads the Superbox club alongside Thomas Bunby, said: “Her opponent was strong, but Bella’s lightning-fast hands overwhelmed her."

Dempsey is no stranger to winning titles either, as she triumphed in the Midlands Box Cup, Riviera Box Cup and the Merseyside and Cheshire Regional Development Championships last year before taking bronze in the nationals.

Clubmate Thomas Evans, 11, a regional final winner this year who was a Manchester Box Cup winner in 2023, again performed well in Leigh.

He showed great footwork before losing a split decision in his semi-final against Kylan Rimmer.

Northwich Superbox have moved into their new home at Rudheath Academy, having previously been based at Supergym Combat Sports Academy on Winnington Hall Industrial Estate.

They will be staging an open day at Rudheath Academy from noon on Saturday, September 7, to showcase what they have to offer the community.

As part of this event, former New Era Boxing Club amateur and now professional Kyle Davies will be demonstrating his skills.

Refreshments will be available and anybody wanting further information can contact the club via superbox.org.uk

She worked under the close direction of Steven Bunby, Lee Frazer, Pete Riding, Tomas Bunby, Mike Dempsey and Jimmy Evans from the Superbox coaching team.

Earlier this year she clinched bronze in the national championships, won the Midlands Box Club belt and also clinched gold in the Riviera Box Cup.

Victoria Road Primary School pupils try new things during sports week

SCHOOLCHILDREN have been boxing, fencing and cheerleading as part of an exercise-packed week of activities.

Victoria Road Primary School in Northwich held its ‘sports week’ before half term, encouraging pupils to try something new.

Unfortunately, torrential rain put a stop to sports day itself, giving the children something to look forward to when they come back after the holidays.

Kimberley Clarke, deputy head teacher and PE lead, said: “We wanted to allow the children to see that there is a sport for everyone. During the week the children took part in a variety of activities.

We were disappointed to have to postpone our sports day due to the weather however we are excited to hold this after half term.

“A great week was had by all and there was a lovely buzz around school and on the playground.

“A huge thank you to all the sports companies that supported the school during the week.”

Sports week began on Monday (May 20) with the theme of ‘Try Something New’.

With that in mind, the school welcomed Scoot Fit, a nationwide company which promotes fitness through scooting.

Children were able to enjoy zooming around the playground to music before playing a game of scoot football.

It was the turn of the staff on Tuesday, with teachers taking part in a spin bike challenge.

From 8.30am to 3.30pm staff took turns to keep the bike spinning, raising £180 in the process to help fund a theatre experience for the pupils.

Elsewhere during the week, children were treated to a boxing exercise session led by the team from Superbox and also took part in yoga sessions and cheerleading.

The week ended with a visit from Sports Coaching Group, who showed pupils a range of sports including curling and fencing.

Superbox Gym Northwich celebrates regional champions

Thomas and Jimmy Evans – both of whom represent the Superbox club – were victorious at the recent regional finals in Bootle to add to the two area champions the club already boasted in Mason Warburton and Bella Dempsey.

Thomas emerged as the winner in the 34kg schoolboy cadet weight class, winning his final fight via a unanimous decision against Marybone Boxing Club’s Michael Smith.

His older brother Jimmy then made sure it was two titles for the household as he claimed victory in the 54kg schoolboy cadet class by beating Riley Gregory via a decision.

Superbox is led by coaches Steve and Thomas Bunby and the club is gearing up for a move to a bigger space at Rudheath Academy in the coming weeks.

The club are on the lookout for more support in terms of sponsorship and any interested parties are invited to email superboxgymnorthwich@gmail.com.

Superbox CIC fighters win titles

Superbox Northwich CIC brothers Thomas and Jimmy Jr Evans also got among the medals at the Manchester Box Cup.

Thomas, 10, won gold in the 32kg 2013 category, while Jimmy, 13, claimed silver in the 52kg 2009 class.

Steve Bunby, owner of Superbox CIC based at Supergym Combat Sports Academy on the Winnington Hall Industrial Estate, is delighted with the achievements of ‘lovely lads who are a good support for each other.’

He said: “These two lads have done skills and not had a bout until this, so I think it’s a brilliant achievement.

“Thomas boxed well behind his jab, produced great movement and got a second-round stoppage.

“Jimmy Jr got beat on points against the national champion in a close fight. Considering it was his first open bout Jimmy boxed well.”

Their clubmate Bella Dempsey continued her outstanding progress when she delivered a second tournament triumph in six weeks.

The 14-year-old, a a student at County High School, Leftwich, has added the Riviera Box Cup title to her Midland Box Cup success in June.

She defeated Lexi Miller in the 60kg 2008 category in Torquay.

“That’s her fourth bout and she’s won two Box Cups and a bronze in the nationals this year, which I think is pretty incredible,” said Bunby.

“The girl she boxed had a lot more experience and she won on unanimous decision which is brilliant in my book.”

Beginners’ classes are being run by Superbox CIC at Rudheath Academy on Tuesdays.

Superbox would like to hear from any businesses who can offer support.

More details in either instance are available by contacting superboxgymnorthwich@gmail.com.

Mason Warburton in English Boxing Association national semi-final

A NORTHWICH teenager is in the mix to win a national boxing title this weekend.

Mason Warburton, a student at Weaverham High School, has already been crowned under 70kg Cheshire and Merseyside regional champion.

Now the 14-year-old is gearing up for the England Boxing National Junior Championships semi-finals at Robin Park Sports & Tennis Centre in Wigan on Saturday.

Victory would hand him a return to the venue for the final the following day.

He is one of three youngsters from the 12-months-old Superbox CIC club in Winnington to have set out on this year's 'nationals' journey.

Isabella Dempsey, 14, a student at The County High School Leftwich, will be fighting in the quarter-finals this Saturday, having come through the regionals by default because there was no opponent to box.

And Phoenix Frazer, 11, who lives in Northwich but attends Knutsford Academy, is entered into the tournament and awaiting his first fight.

Warburton, who first started recreational boxing when he was nine-years-old, is leading by example, having fought numerous fights already to reach the concluding weekend in Wigan.

Among them, he defeated Evan Atkinson as he exploited his fast jab and body shots to win his regional semi-final contest in Birkenhead.

In the final in Liverpool he won the decision against Louis Ready, displaying masterful head movement and strong counter attacks.

Then at the weekend in the national quarter-finals in Carlisle he defeated Jack Morgan by close decision.

"I don't think anyone from Northwich has ever won the nationals. I don't think we've had a regional championship winner so it's big in my book," said Superbox joint owner and head coach, Steven Bunby, 52.

"Mason's a dedicated young man. Before he goes to school, he runs 5k. He finishes school, does his homework, has his tea and comes to the boxing gym until 9pm."

Warburton's talent has stood out for other reasons on the nationals journey so far.

Bunby said: "He could be boxing kids two years older than him and he's the lightest in the category, coming in not at 70kg but at about 67kg, so he's got a lot of things that could go against him technically but obviously he's good so this is where he's at."

Bunby and his uncle, Tom Bunby, have a history in coaching but set up the non-profit Superbox club last year.

They have 10 youngsters on their books, five of whom currently fight competitively.

For more than eight months the club had no indoor base and the youngsters trained outside 'in all weathers'.

Now they are grateful for being able to rent a ring at Supergym Combat Sports Academy on the Winnington Hall Industrial Estate and are working towards a permanent home.

They have coaches, volunteers, a secretary, a welfare officer and a fundraising officer in place.

"We are most probably the smallest club in the whole of Great Britain, but considering where we've got in a year is unbelievable because we've built ourselves up from nothing," said Bunby, a former Winsford Boxing Club amateur fighter who worked for the British Boxing Board of Control for six years

"I couldn't have done it without all the valuable support of the brilliant coaches, volunteers and small businesses that have helped us along the way.

"If any business would like to help us further, contact our fundraising officer Mike Dempsey by email at mjddempsey@gmail.com."

County High School pupil Bella Dempsey wins Midlands Box Cup

UP-AND-COMING teenage boxer Bella Dempsey is continuing to catch the eye.

The 14-year-old Superbox CIC competitor, a student at County High School, Leftwich, won the Midlands Box Cup in her category at the weekend.

This success builds on her bronze medal achievement in the England Boxing National Junior Championships three months ago.

Dempsey stopped her opponent, Elizabeth Ozier from Thetford, in the first round of their deciding showdown in sauna-like conditions at Secret Space in Digbeth, Birmingham, on Sunday.

Ozier had stopped her opponent in the semi-finals, which highlights the strength of Dempsey's display.

Superbox CIC head coach Steve Bunby is full of praise for his fighter's performance, as well as her all-round approach to a sport in which she has achieved a lot in just three bouts.

"The girl that Bella boxed was quite aggressive and Bella tried to keep her distance and then hit her with strong one-twos and a strong job," said Bunby.

"The ref gave the girl two eight-counts in the first round and that was it, the ref called it off.

"Bella was a bit better boxer and used her height advantage. The girl rushed in and Bella tried to keep it long."

Bunby added: "Bella has worked really hard in training.

"She's a very good listener, that's her main asset. You can tell her quite a lot of information and she can take it in. With certain boxers, you can't tell them too much.

"She was absolutely made up, as was her dad who is her coach as well.

"What a great belt she's won. They gave me one to put up in the club as well, which was really kind of them. It will inspire other kids."On a side note, Bella's brilliant with newcomers at the club. She doesn't make anyone feel out of place, she's really caring to others."

Dempsey is expected to feature in the England Development Championships later this year.

That is an event for boxers with less than 10 bouts under their belts, which will suit Dempsey because when she participated in the England Boxing National Junior Championships in March there were girls in attendance with experience of '20 to 30 bouts' whereas she had- not had any at that stage.

This will be perfect for her," said Bunby.

"It's more her level, because going from zero fights to 30 is a huge difference."

Meanwhile, the club are in the process of buying and storing equipment ready for a move to Rudheath Academy from where they are currently based at Supergym Combat Sports Academy on the Winnington Hall Industrial Estate.

Superbox CIC fighters win medals at national junior championships

BOXERS from Superbox CIC in Winnington did themselves proud in the final stages of their national tournament.

Mason Warburton brought home a silver medal and Isabella Dempsey a bronze as both fought in the England Boxing National Junior Championships in Wigan on Saturday.

Fourteen-year-old Warburton – a student at Weaverham High School – was pitted against Tristan Dignam of Exmouth in the male under 70kgs semi-finals and put in a superb display.

His fast combinations and quick footwork eventually led to the referee stopping the contest, putting Warburton into the gold medal final.

He was up against European champion Bailey Wilding of Mikey’s Boxing Gym in Kidderminster and despite another good performance, he just lost out but claimed a silver medal.

Dempsey, also 14, was pitted against Mary Love of Priory Park Boxing Club in Dudley in the female junior cadet under 57kgs weight class.

The County High School student threw some powerful combinations and gained great experience fighting a tough opponent but was beaten by unanimous decision.

Superbox CIC are based at Supergym Combat Sports Academy on the Winnington Hall Industrial Estate.
